Position: Engineering Manager | Medium
Introduction
We have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Manager at Life Bedford Gardens Hospital. This position will report directly to Paul Mokoena, the Hospital Manager. The main goal of this role is to lead and guide the hospital’s engineering team. You will ensure that all equipment and infrastructure—both movable and immovable—are maintained and operated efficiently and safely. Additionally, you will oversee construction projects in the hospital, ensuring they comply with the highest standards and relevant laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with hospital staff and management.
- Provide professional guidance and foster open communication within the engineering team and across departments.
- Engineering Department Oversight
- Manage the engineering department by implementing a maintenance management strategy and best practices.
- Focus on maximizing the efficiency and availability of all plant and equipment.
- Oversee the execution of infrastructure and construction projects.
- Infrastructure Management
- Supervise all clinical infrastructure and assets within the hospital.
- Ensure that all aspects of team performance, including recruitment, training, and retention, are effectively managed.
- Training and Development
- Work with the HR Manager to create training and succession plans that meet statutory competency requirements for staff roles.
- Train nursing, pharmacy, administration, and management teams on technical issues as needed.
- Administrative Functions
- Handle administrative tasks, such as writing performance reports, managing documents, analyzing data, and overseeing expenditures.
- Support decision-making processes regarding key engineering projects.
- Performance Tracking
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement.
- Report on functional metrics regularly to ensure accountability and progress.
- Strategic Initiatives
- Contribute to strategic planning to enhance efficiencies, such as reviewing utility costs and suggesting modifications to equipment.
- Quality Assurance
- Review and assess the performance of the engineering quality system, ensuring compliance with regulations like the OHS Act and SANS.
- Budget Management
- Prepare budgets and bids, negotiate contracts, and resolve any disputes related to engineering projects.
- Contractor Oversight
- Manage the performance of contractors, ensuring they meet required standards and deadlines.
- Technical Evaluation
- Investigate new industry technologies, assess their benefits, and prepare business cases for potential funding.
- Maintenance Management
- Oversee the maintenance management system, ensuring risks are identified and addressed timely.
- Ensure that all repairs and maintenance are performed as necessary.
- Design Input
- Address maintainability issues during the design and development phases of projects to facilitate effective maintenance and lower lifecycle costs.
Requirements
- Education:
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- BSc, BEng, BTech, National Diploma, or GCC in Mechanical or Electrical (Heavy Current) Engineering.
- Experience:
- At least 3 years of practical experience in a hospital or similar environment is essential.
- Proficiency in using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or SAP PM is preferred.
- Skills:
- Proven leadership and people management skills.
- Knowledge of contract negotiation, OHS regulations, facilities management, project management, and engineering procurement practices.
