Nurse Manager | General

Job Title: Nurse Manager | General
Location: Life Westville Hospital

Reporting To: Senior Nurse Manager, Bronwen Glaeser


About the Role

Life Westville Hospital has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Manager (General) to join our team. This role is essential in managing nursing operations across various general units in the hospital. The ideal candidate will oversee the day-to-day running of these units, making sure we provide high-quality care that aligns with our hospital’s growth, quality, efficiency, and sustainability goals. As Nurse Manager, you’ll be responsible for guiding and supporting the nursing team to ensure we maintain excellence in patient care while keeping costs efficient.


Key Responsibilities

1. Managing Clinical Outcomes

  • Oversee nursing operations, ensuring that all hospital and company standards, policies, and procedures are followed consistently.
  • Monitor performance using key nursing quality metrics to meet targets.
  • Ensure that the hospital maintains high standards of quality and compliance, continuously improving based on accreditation systems and benchmarking.
  • Lead efforts in infection control, ensuring that all units comply with best practices.
  • Drive nursing quality improvement initiatives across all wards.

2. Nursing Efficiency and Budget Management

  • Participate in creating and managing budgets for the wards, providing necessary input during the budgeting process.
  • Monitor and manage nursing costs, labor hours, and staffing, ensuring an optimal skill mix.
  • Work to meet the hospital’s internal targets for nursing operations and E.Billing compliance in all wards.
  • Look for ways to save costs by driving product changes and encouraging efficient use of resources in all nursing units.

3. Building Relationships with Key Stakeholders

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal stakeholders (such as department heads, peers, and nursing colleges) and external stakeholders (like doctors, suppliers, government departments, and other healthcare agencies).
  • Participate actively in hospital forums and external meetings to build professional networks that support the hospital’s goals.

4. Leading and Managing People

  • Be a visible leader who embodies Life Healthcare’s values and vision.
  • Lead by example, guiding staff and inspiring positive work behavior in the nursing units.
  • Support initiatives that improve nursing practice and hospital operations.
  • Be responsible for recruiting, retaining, and developing nursing staff, ensuring that they are motivated and aligned with Life Healthcare’s people policies.

5. Marketing and Community Engagement

  • Promote the professional image of nursing within the local community.
  • Help grow the number of nursing students by participating in marketing efforts aimed at encouraging more people to consider nursing as a career.
  • Drive formal nurse training and continuous professional development within the hospital.
  • Represent the hospital at various community events to boost its reputation and community engagement.

6. Project Management

  • Take the lead on nursing-related projects, working with teams across different departments to implement the hospital’s nursing strategy.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Nursing Qualification: Degree or Diploma in Nursing, with current registration from the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • A post-graduate qualification in Nursing Administration or Nursing Education would be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven leadership and management experience in a healthcare setting (preferably within private healthcare).
  • In-depth understanding of private healthcare, relevant legislation, and Department of Health core standards.
  • Knowledge of nursing workload management and resource allocation.
  • Ability to manage change effectively within the hospital.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in using essential computer software.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.
