Ilima Coal Mine, also referred to as Pembani Coal Carolina, is a significant coal mining operation located in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, specifically near the town of Carolina. This mine, characterized by its combined opencast and underground mining techniques, is currently owned and operated by the Pretorius Group of Companies (PGC).

The Ilima colliery’s strategic location places it approximately 3 kilometers east of Carolina, positioned immediately north of the R38 highway, a key transportation artery within Mpumalanga Province. This proximity to the R38 facilitates the efficient transportation of coal and related resources.

The history of the Ilima Coal Mine includes a noteworthy ownership transition. In 2016, PGC finalized a comprehensive takeover agreement with Pembani Coal Carolina (PCC), the mine’s previous owner. About Company:
Given the extensive area encompassed by the Ilima mining right, PGC has adopted a phased development approach to both its opencast and underground mining activities. This strategic approach allows for efficient resource management and optimization over the mine’s projected operational lifespan, estimated to be approximately 30 years.
