The Firefighter Learnership is a structured entry‑level emergency services training programme designed to develop a new generation of qualified firefighters through practical and theoretical training. Learners gain real-world experience under municipal supervision while earning a monthly stipend. This is not a traditional classroom-only internship but a comprehensive hands-on programme.

Training Components
During the 12‑month period, learners are trained in multiple emergency and safety disciplines, including:
- Firefighting Abilities: How to use hoses, fire extinguishers, and pumps for building and factory fires.
- Saving People: Methods for finding and rescuing individuals, getting people out of crashed cars, and performing rescues in high places.
- Medical Help in Emergencies: Simple first aid, CPR, and immediate life-saving actions at emergency sites.
- Understanding Dangerous Substances: Recognizing and handling dangers from chemicals, fuels, or industrial materials.
- Keeping Safe and Maintaining Gear: Using air tanks, safety clothing, and regularly checking equipment.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants generally must meet the following criteria:
- You need to have finished high school.
- Math and science skills are a plus.
- You must be a South African citizen.
- You need to show where you live.
- You can’t have a criminal record.
- You’ll need to pass a security check.
- You must be okay with working different hours.
- This includes weekends and holidays.
