Introduction
We have an exciting opportunity for a Unit Manager in our Cardio-Thoracic Intensive Care Unit at Life The Glynnwood Hospital. This role reports directly to the Nursing Manager Specialized, Siyabonga Buthelezi. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in managing and coordinating clinical practices and resources within the unit. Your leadership will help us meet the hospital’s goals for quality care, growth, and the well-being of our staff and patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership:
- Provide effective leadership in the unit by guiding the nursing care plan and ensuring that the treatment plan is executed correctly within the multidisciplinary team (MDT) program.
- Act as a clinical expert, focusing on achieving positive patient outcomes through quality care and effective treatment strategies.
- Monitor and evaluate the competencies of staff and students, set criteria for their professional development, foster a supportive learning environment, and provide constructive feedback to relevant stakeholders.
- Enhance patient satisfaction by addressing concerns, conducting quality care rounds, and performing audits on clinical practices to maintain high standards of care.
- Implement national quality initiatives to improve clinical outcomes, and provide reports on progress and areas for improvement.
- Identify any clinical and safety risks, implement necessary corrective actions, and continually monitor these aspects to ensure ongoing safety and quality in the unit.
- Initiate and promote best practices specific to the unit, share successful strategies for wider application, and engage in hospital marketing initiatives.
- Leadership and People Management:
- Exhibit visible leadership that aligns with Life Healthcare’s values, operational model, and nursing strategy. Actively support and promote LHC initiatives to enhance productivity and staff engagement.
- Manage all people-related processes in the unit, ensuring a positive and productive work environment for all staff members.
- Financial Management:
- Participate in the business planning and budgeting process, ensuring nursing costs are managed within the approved budget.
- Oversee stock utilization and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to drive effective product management in the unit.
- Ensure that nursing clinical outcomes in the ICU meet Life Healthcare standards, maintaining compliance with labor hour norms and budget constraints.
- Provide training for staff on how to operate clinical equipment and ensure that all equipment is functional to create a safe environment for patient care.
- Relationship Management:
- Develop and sustain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including heads of departments, patients, families, and service providers. Open communication and feedback are essential.
- Collaborate with doctors to agree on a professional code of conduct, facilitate effective communication regarding patient outcomes, and advocate for Life Healthcare while addressing industry challenges that affect nursing.
Qualifications Required:
- A degree or diploma in General Nursing, registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- A degree or diploma in Critical Nursing Care.
- Relevant experience in nursing management to fulfill the critical outputs of this role.
- Proven leadership and people management skills are preferred.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council.
- Basic understanding of labor legislation, financial principles, and change management.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- A valid driver’s license and access to your own transport.
