Reporting To: Nurse Manager
About the Position
Life Cosmos Hospital is looking for a dedicated Unit Manager for Medical 2. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to make a difference in patient care. The chosen candidate will play a crucial role in managing and coordinating clinical practices and resources in the Medical 2 unit. Your efforts will help us achieve our goals of quality healthcare, growth, and a supportive work environment for our staff.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership
- Lead the team in implementing effective nursing care plans. Ensure that patients receive the right treatment as part of a coordinated multidisciplinary team (MDT) program.
- Act as a clinical expert, guiding staff to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Assess the competence of nursing staff and students, establish clear criteria for professional development, and create a supportive learning environment.
- Work to enhance patient satisfaction by addressing complaints, conducting regular quality care rounds, and performing clinical audits to monitor and improve care standards.
- Implement national quality initiatives aimed at improving clinical outcomes and maintain detailed reports on progress.
- Identify any clinical or safety risks within the unit, taking corrective actions as needed and continually monitoring for improvements.
- Promote best practices specific to the unit, communicate these effectively for broader application, and take part in marketing initiatives for the hospital.
2. Leadership and People Management
- Exhibit visible leadership that reflects the values of Life Healthcare, supporting nursing strategies and promoting a positive image of the nursing profession.
- Manage all aspects of human resources within the unit, ensuring a motivated and skilled nursing team.
3. Financial Management and Equipment Oversight
- Be actively involved in business planning and budgeting processes, ensuring nursing costs align with the budget.
- Monitor stock utilization effectively and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to manage product processes within the unit.
- Ensure that nursing staff are properly trained in using medical equipment, and work with stakeholders to maintain equipment in safe and working order.
4. Building Relationships
- Foster and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including department heads, patients, family members, and service providers.
- Collaborate closely with doctors, adhering to professional standards and facilitating effective communication about patient outcomes. Advocate for Life Healthcare and inform stakeholders about challenges facing the nursing profession.
Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Background: Degree or Diploma in Nursing, with current registration from the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Experience: Relevant nursing experience that meets the outlined responsibilities is essential.
- Leadership Skills: Previous experience in leadership or management roles is preferred.
- Understanding of Legislation: A basic grasp of labor laws and financial management principles will be beneficial.
- Healthcare Knowledge: Familiarity with the private healthcare sector and its challenges is an advantage.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in using computers and relevant software.
- Mobility: A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel as needed.
