Maintenance Assistant

Job Title: Maintenance Assistant
Department: Engineering
Location: Life Empangeni Private Hospital

Introduction:
We are excited to announce a job opening for a Maintenance Assistant at Life Empangeni Private Hospital. This role is crucial to ensuring that our facilities are safe, well-maintained, and comfortable for both patients and staff. You will report directly to the Engineering Manager and work closely with other team members to keep our hospital in excellent condition.

Job Responsibilities:
As a Maintenance Assistant, your daily tasks will include:

  • Daily Inspections: Regularly inspect all areas of the hospital to spot any problems or damages related to the building, furniture, or fixtures. Your keen eye will help us maintain a safe environment.
  • Responding to Requests: Quickly address requests for soft maintenance services from wards and common areas. This can involve changing air filters, installing locks, or troubleshooting issues with smoke detectors.
  • Repair Work: Carry out repairs on plumbing, furniture, bathroom fixtures, and safety systems in the wards whenever needed.
  • Safety Checks: Make sure that the parking lot and sidewalks are clear of any obstacles that could cause accidents or injuries.
  • Fire Safety: Regularly check and maintain fire safety equipment like sprinklers, hydrants, and extinguishers to ensure they are in working order.
  • Appliance Testing: Test the performance of kitchen appliances and in-unit equipment such as toasters, microwaves, and coffee machines to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Guidance for Staff: Offer advice and assistance to nursing staff on how to maintain their wards and shared spaces effectively.
  • Additional Requests: Be responsive to maintenance requests from doctor’s offices and other service areas to address soft service needs.
  • Technical Skills: You should be skilled in maintaining and repairing various fixtures, including air conditioning, carpentry, drywall, small power, flooring, bathrooms, roofing, and windows.
  • Maintenance Tasks: Perform tasks like painting and pressure washing different areas of the hospital to keep it looking fresh.
  • Signage and Decor: Take care of signage, wall decorations, flower pots, TV mounts, and road markings to ensure everything looks neat and professional.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to take standby duties for emergencies or after-hours call-outs, demonstrating your commitment to the hospital’s upkeep.

Requirements:
To be considered for this role, you should have:

  • A Grade 12 qualification.
  • A qualification in mechanical or civil engineering, or carpentry/plumbing, or an N4 in building maintenance is a plus.
  • At least 3 years of experience in engineering or facilities maintenance, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Practical experience in a hospital or similar environment is essential.
