Job Overview
Life Fourways Hospital is looking for a qualified and dedicated Registered Nurse (ICU Qualified) to join our dynamic ICU team. If you have experience working with critically ill patients and are passionate about providing top-quality care, this opportunity might be perfect for you. In this role, you will focus on delivering comprehensive and compassionate nursing care to ICU patients to help them achieve the best possible health outcomes. You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary medical team, patients, and their families to ensure smooth and effective healthcare delivery.
Key Responsibilities
1. Delivering Excellent Patient Care
- Specialized Nursing Care: You will provide both basic and advanced nursing care to critically ill patients, ensuring they receive the attention they need throughout their recovery journey.
- Patient and Family Communication: You’ll keep the patient’s family informed about their condition, providing updates and addressing any concerns to maintain open communication.
- Medication Administration: You will administer medications following ethical and legal standards, ensuring accurate dosing and monitoring patient responses.
- Policy Adherence: Ensure all care provided is in line with hospital policies and protocols.
- Quality Management: Contribute to maintaining quality control systems to ensure the ICU functions effectively and meets its specific standards.
2. Advocating for Patients
- Patient Acuity: Advocate for the patient by managing their acuity and communicating with case managers and doctors regarding any potential limitations or concerns.
- Collaborating with Doctors: Work closely with doctors, ensuring that all prescriptions and treatment plans are followed and any concerns are quickly escalated to the appropriate team member.
3. Effective Teamwork and People Management
- Collaboration: Engage with a wide range of healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
- Staff Training: Mentor and train junior nursing staff to support their professional development and ensure that the ICU team operates at its best.
- Skills Mix: Ensure the ICU team is properly staffed with the right mix of skills to provide optimal care.
4. Efficient Cost Management
- Stock Control: Manage and monitor medical supplies to ensure adequate stock levels without wastage.
- Staff Management: Oversee staff scheduling and leave to ensure smooth operations while adhering to hospital policies.
5. Maintaining a Safe Environment
- Infection Control: Ensure a clean and safe environment by following strict infection control protocols, minimizing risks for both staff and patients.
- Incident Reporting: Report any safety hazards or incidents promptly by filling out SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) alerts to promote a safe workspace.
6. Stakeholder Relations
- Doctor Preferences: Conduct orientations to ensure nurses are familiar with specific doctor preferences.
- Multi-disciplinary Collaboration: Assist other team members in fulfilling their duties for the benefit of the patient.
7. Equipment Management
- Daily Checks: Ensure that all medical equipment is in good working condition, reporting any malfunctions to the Unit Manager and Clinical Engineer.
- Staff Education: Train staff and doctors on how to properly use specialized ICU equipment.
8. Record Keeping
- Accurate Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate medical records, ensuring they meet both legal and ethical standards.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- A Diploma or Degree in Nursing is essential.
- Post-Basic Qualification in Critical Care, recognized by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as ICU qualified.
- A minimum of 2 years’ ICU experience is required, specifically in handling critically ill patients.
- Strong skills in communication, team collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Ability to stay calm and organized in high-pressure environments.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including both day and night shifts, depending on hospital needs.
