KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS
Prepare graduates to give emergency medical help, doing what an Emergency Care Assistant is trained to do, in different places where emergency medical services are needed.
Graduates can sign up with the HPCSA as Emergency Care Assistants.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Entry Requirements
- If you have a Senior Certificate (issued before 2008), you need to have passed the following subjects with at least these grades:
- English (at least D on the Higher Grade or C on the Standard Grade)
- Mathematics (at least E on the Higher Grade or D on the Standard Grade)
- Biology and/or Physical Sciences (at least E on the Higher Grade or D on the Standard Grade)
OR
- The applicant with a National Senior Certificate with a Higher Certificate Endorsement must have the following subjects and rating codes:
- English (4)
- Mathematics (3) or Mathematical Literacy (6)
- Life Sciences (3) and/or Physical Science (3)
- The applicant must have a minimum of 19 points (22 points if Mathematical Literacy applies), which excludes Life Orientation
OR
- National Certificate (Vocational), must have achieved the minimum codes, as indicated for the following subjects:
- English (5)
- Mathematics (4) or Mathematics Literacy (7)
- Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences (4)
The candidates must have a minimum of 24 points (27 points if Mathematical Literacy applies), which excludes Life Orientation
REQUIRED JOB SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
We will review all applications, but will favor those that align with Mediclinic Southern Africa’s Employment Equity Plan. Current employees who qualify will also get preference.
It is advised to have at least 40 hours of volunteer work in emergency medical care.
To be accepted, people applying must pass health and fitness tests (the rules for these tests are on the Mediclinic website).
If you qualify, you’ll be asked to come to an interview and do health and fitness checks as part of the selection.
If you don’t have all the qualifications needed, but you have worked in healthcare, you can still apply to the Higher Certificate program through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The RPL applicant has to meet the following minimum requirements:
- Have a valid Matric (grade 12) with admission to a higher certificate or equivalent with an APS score as indicated above or an old senior certificate with an aggregate of 950 marks or higher with the compulsory subjects
- Be 25 years and older
- Be a registered Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) OR Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) with the HPCSA
- Have a minimum of 5 years of operational experience
- Be currently employed by an Emergency Medical Service Write and pass the theory and clinical assessments
Rules and Requirements
- To take the final exam, students need at least a 50% average in each subject.
- Students must pass all practical, fitness, and clinical tests given throughout the year and at the end.
- A student needs a final grade of 50% or higher in each subject to pass the year.
- Students must meet all the requirements to finish each year of study and get their degree.
- Students can retake theory and clinical exams if they qualify.
- If students fail a year, they may keep credit for some of their theory courses. However, if they fail any of the Emergency Medical Care courses, they must retake all three to move on to the next year. If a student fails a non-clinical course, they must keep their clinical skills sharp by working clinical practice shifts each month.
- Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd will arrange clinical placements for students in the program.
- Students can’t have permanent night shifts while in the program.
- Students get 12 sick days per year if they provide a doctor’s note.
- Each year, employees get twelve (12) days of paid sick leave if they provide a doctor’s note.
- Time off will be allowed based on the school schedule.
