Introduction

We are excited to announce a job opening for a Unit Manager in the Dialysis Unit at Life Renal Dialysis, Wits Donald Gordon. This position reports directly to the Area Head of Operations. The chosen candidate will play a vital role in managing and coordinating clinical practices and resources within the unit, aiming to meet our hospital’s goals of quality, growth, and fostering a supportive environment for our staff and patients.

Key Responsibilities

1. Effective Clinical Leadership:

  • Oversee the implementation of nursing care plans and ensure the delivery of appropriate treatment as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). This is essential for achieving the best clinical outcomes for our patients.
  • Serve as a clinical expert, guiding the team in their efforts to improve patient care.
  • Assess the skills and competencies of staff and students, setting criteria for professional growth, fostering a learning environment, and providing constructive feedback to all stakeholders involved.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction within the unit by addressing complaints promptly, conducting quality care rounds, and performing clinical practice audits to monitor care standards.
  • Implement national quality initiatives focused on improving clinical outcomes, with regular reporting on progress.
  • Identify and address clinical and safety risks, implementing necessary corrective actions and monitoring their effectiveness continuously.
  • Promote and establish best practices specific to the unit, communicating these to encourage broader implementation and participating in hospital marketing efforts.

2. Strong Leadership and People Management:

  • Exhibit visible leadership aligned with Life Healthcare’s values, operating model, and nursing strategy. Actively promote Life Healthcare initiatives and projects to enhance productivity and quality.
  • Manage all people-related processes effectively within the unit, ensuring a motivated and skilled team.

3. Financial Management and Equipment Oversight:

  • Engage in business planning and budgeting, ensuring nursing costs are kept within the approved budget.
  • Oversee the use of stock and manage product processes in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure that staff are adequately trained in the operation of all equipment, maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff alike.

4. Relationship Building with Stakeholders:

  • Foster and maintain productive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including department heads, enabling functions, patients, families, and service providers through continuous communication and feedback.
  • Collaborate with doctors to establish a professional code of conduct, encouraging effective communication aimed at achieving positive patient outcomes and advocating for Life Healthcare. Address industry challenges impacting the nursing profession.

Requirements

  • A Degree or Diploma in Nursing or a Degree in Clinical Technology (Renal).
  • Current registration with SANC or HPCSA.
  • Relevant experience in renal nursing is essential to fulfill the critical outputs of this role.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills are advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of labor legislation and financial management principles is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the private healthcare sector, its challenges, and key players would be a plus.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as needed.
