Position: Registered Nurse 2IC (Second-in-Charge) | Emergency Unit

Introduction
Life Cosmos Hospital is looking for a dedicated and skilled Registered Nurse to step into the role of Second-in-Charge (2IC) in our busy Emergency Unit. If you’re passionate about delivering excellent patient care, managing staff, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. The successful candidate will assist the Unit Manager in running the emergency department and will be responsible for providing high-quality care, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining strong relationships with doctors, staff, patients, and other stakeholders.

You will work closely with Brian Mashaba, the Unit Manager, and step into a leadership role when he is not available.

Key Responsibilities

As the 2IC in the Emergency Unit, your duties will include:

  • Staff and Stock Management:
    • Keep a close eye on employee working hours to make sure that labour is managed effectively by balancing credit and debit hours.
    • Help reduce stock wastage by making sure that supplies are used wisely and that all medical equipment is maintained properly.
  • Patient Care:
    • Ensure that new staff receive a thorough orientation specific to the Emergency Unit.
    • Perform daily care rounds to check on patients and address any complaints or issues promptly.
    • Make sure that patients and their families receive clear, accurate information throughout their stay, helping them understand procedures and what to expect.
  • Risk Management and Safety:
    • Implement safety protocols and infection control measures to reduce risks in the unit.
    • Ensure compliance with ISO standards to support proper infection control and hygiene practices.
  • Relationships with Stakeholders:
    • Understand the preferences of doctors and the needs of other stakeholders (such as patients and families), and incorporate them into the daily functioning of the unit.
    • Actively support the Unit Manager with administrative and management tasks.
  • Leadership Role:
    • When the Unit Manager is absent, you will take over the management of the unit, ensuring that everything continues to run smoothly and efficiently.

Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A degree or diploma in Nursing.
  • Experience and qualification in Emergency Care are essential for this role.
  • Current registration with the relevant professional body (such as the South African Nursing Council).
  • A good understanding of the private healthcare industry would be beneficial, especially the challenges and key players in the field.
  • Proficiency in using a computer for tasks such as patient records, reporting, and communication.

  • Organisational awareness – Understanding the structure and operations of the hospital to effectively navigate its systems and processes.
