- The Role of an Electrician UG, C3
As an Electrician UG, C3, the primary responsibility will be to perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on electrical systems in compliance with established safety regulations. The role will require a high level of skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently, ensuring all electrical systems are functional and meet safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
The Electrician UG, C3 will be responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment and machinery to ensure maximum availability and reliability. This includes:
- Keep equipment working well and reduce breakdowns by maintaining and fixing it safely.
- Make sure all engineering work follows the rules and laws, like the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Check electrical systems regularly, and write down all maintenance, repairs, and inspections on forms to prove compliance.
- Find problems in electrical systems and fix them with little oversight.
- Keep the workplace clean and tidy, and put tools and equipment away after using them.
- Before starting any job, perform risk assessments to make sure the work is done safely.
- Be ready to work different shifts, extra hours, and be on call to keep things running smoothly at Kriel Colliery.

Key Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for the role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Electrical Trade Test Certificate: You must have a valid certificate showing you are a qualified electrician.
- Educational Qualifications:
- Internal Applicants: You need a Grade 12 certificate with a passing grade (E or higher) in both Math (not Math Literacy) and Science, plus two N2 subjects related to the electrical trade, as the MQA requires.
- External Applicants: You need a Grade 12 certificate with a passing grade (E or higher) in both Math (not Math Literacy) and Science, plus four N2 subjects related to the electrical trade, as the MQA requires.
- Knowledge of Safety Regulations: You must know the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and safety rules well, and always work safely.
- Experience: You need at least two years of experience as an Electrician after getting your trade certificate, ideally working in underground coal mines.
- Driver’s License and Transport: You need a valid K53 driver’s license and your own car.
- Health and Fitness: You need to have a health certificate or be able to get one before you start working.
Other Required Skills:
- Knowledge of high-tension (HT) systems, reticulation drawings, and various underground electrical systems (such as Gate end boxes, Genwest/Dimako, and Microload).
- Proficiency in the operation of water pumps and jet fans.
- Experience with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers).
- Flame Proofing and Gas Testing knowledge will be advantageous.
Advantageous Experience:
- Knowledge of HT switching and risk management courses.
- Experience working with equipment such as Guduza, Peflo, and Microload systems.
- Safety and Risk Management Courses will be beneficial.
