Key Responsibilities

  • Security Officers mainly work to keep SMU safe and secure. They do different tasks to stop problems from happening, make sure the property is safe, and quickly react to emergencies.

The officer will report directly to the Chief Security Officer and be responsible for the following key performance areas:

Access Control

The Security Officer will be responsible for managing the access points to the university. This includes assisting employees and students in utilizing access cards to enter the campus and monitoring visitors, contractors, and non-card holders. The officer will also conduct inspections of individuals, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring that only authorized personnel and materials enter or leave the campus.

Patrol and Guard Duties

Keeping constant vigilance over the premises, the Security Officer will patrol the campus, inspecting strategic points, observing suspicious activities, and reporting any irregularities. Regular checks for suspicious vehicles, individuals, and activities will help prevent potential incidents. Additionally, the officer will be required to act swiftly in emergencies, guiding people to safety and notifying the Control Room of any hazards.

Crime Prevention

The officer will actively monitor buildings for signs of criminal activity or potential safety risks. This includes identifying broken windows, damaged doors, or other vulnerabilities in the security system. Regular building inspections will help identify potential risks and allow for corrective actions to be taken before any harm occurs.

Emergency Response

The Security Officer will play a critical role in responding to alarms and emergency situations. They will need to maintain constant communication with the Control Room, assess situations, and take necessary actions, such as calling for backup or confronting suspects. Accurate record-keeping of time and actions taken during these events will also be required.

Traffic Control and VIP Parking

The Security Officer will be responsible for overseeing traffic flow and ensuring that parking regulations are followed. This includes managing parking areas during special events and ensuring the safety of vehicles and pedestrians. Monitoring road signs, markings, and the condition of the road surface will also be part of the officer’s duties.

Monitoring and Reporting

The officer will prepare operational reports as required and consult with relevant stakeholders. They will play a vital role in ensuring that security operations run smoothly and efficiently.

Additional Duties

As directed by the Line Manager, the Security Officer may be required to undertake additional duties, such as performing transport duties or contributing to the development of SMU’s institutional culture.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • You need a PSIRA Grade C security license.
  • You must have at least three years of work in the security field.
  • Experience working at a college or university is helpful.
  • You must have a current driver’s license.

Successful candidates should possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Good at managing people and resources, including how well people are doing in their jobs.
  • Able to create good working relationships.
  • Focused on making sure things are done well and managing risks.
  • Understands health and safety rules.
