Introduction
Life Beacon Bay Hospital is seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse to join our ICU team. This role reports directly to Culine Pretorius, Unit Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering exceptional nursing care to critically ill patients, ensuring optimal health outcomes in line with the hospital’s and company’s overall goals.

Key Responsibilities
Quality Patient Care:
- Delivering high-quality, specialized care to critically ill patients.
- Maintaining open and ongoing communication with patients and their families about the patient’s condition, progress, and care plan.
- Administering medications safely and in line with legal and ethical guidelines.
- Ensuring that all nursing practices adhere to hospital policies and protocols.
- Implementing quality management systems and maintaining a high standard of care within the ICU unit.
- Advocating for the patient’s needs by escalating concerns to case management and informing doctors about any changes or limitations in patient care.
Teamwork and Collaboration:
- Working closely with a multi-disciplinary medical team to provide holistic patient care.
- Supporting and contributing to the growth and development of the ICU team through training and mentorship.
- Ensuring that all team members operate within their scope of practice and the appropriate skills are used effectively.
Resource and Cost Management:
- Managing medical supplies and equipment, ensuring they are used efficiently and according to hospital policies.
- Monitoring and controlling staff hours and leave to maintain optimal staffing levels while adhering to company guidelines.
Infection Control and Safety:
- Maintaining a safe environment for patients by implementing infection control protocols.
- Promoting a safe workplace by completing safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) alerts and incident reports when necessary.
Relationship Building:
- Orienting new staff and doctors to unit protocols and specific preferences of attending physicians.
- Carrying out doctors’ requests and prescriptions after patient rounds to ensure timely and effective treatment.
- Assisting other healthcare professionals in the ICU with their responsibilities, fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment.
Equipment Management:
- Checking that all ICU equipment and instruments are functioning properly on a daily basis and reporting any issues to the Unit Manager or Clinical Engineer.
- Educating and overseeing the proper use of specialized equipment by both staff and doctors.
Accurate Record Keeping:
- Ensuring all patient records are accurately maintained and stored in compliance with legal, ethical, and hospital standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
- A relevant Nursing Degree or Diploma.
- Prior experience working in an ICU environment is essential.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to keep patients, families, and team members informed.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing patient needs.
- Willingness to work flexi-hours and be part of an on-call rotation.
