Introduction
A new opportunity has opened up at Life Fourways Hospital for the role of Unit Manager in the Neonatal ICU. This role requires a highly skilled and specialised nurse who will oversee the Neonatal ICU unit, ensuring excellent patient care and efficient use of resources. Reporting directly to Pamela Naidu, the Nursing Manager, this position involves leading a team of nursing professionals to achieve top-quality care and contribute to the hospital’s growth. This is a vital role for someone who is passionate about neonatal care and has the ability to lead with clinical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Leadership
  • Take charge of clinical operations within the Neonatal ICU unit, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to all patients.
  • Lead the development and execution of nursing care plans, ensuring that they are properly aligned with patient needs and medical team goals.
  • Act as the clinical expert, guiding the team to meet patient care standards and expected outcomes.
  • Oversee staff performance, support professional growth, and create a learning environment for both new and experienced nurses.
  • Address and resolve patient concerns to maintain a high level of satisfaction, ensuring that all care practices are regularly reviewed and improved where necessary.
  • Drive the implementation of national clinical quality programs aimed at improving patient outcomes.
  • Identify and monitor clinical risks within the unit, taking appropriate action when necessary to ensure patient safety and the quality of care.
  • Introduce best practices within the unit and promote these practices across the hospital to improve overall operations.
  1. Leadership and Team Management
  • Be a visible leader and role model for the team, embodying the values of Life Healthcare and the nursing profession.
  • Manage the performance of all staff within the unit, ensuring that people processes, such as development and evaluation, are carried out effectively.
  • Lead team meetings and ensure that all nurses are informed and engaged in the unit’s goals and practices.
  1. Financial Management
  • Participate in the planning and budgeting processes for the unit, ensuring that resources are used efficiently.
  • Manage nursing costs in line with the budget, while still maintaining the highest quality of patient care.
  • Oversee the use of medical supplies and equipment, ensuring that the team is well-trained in its use and that equipment is in safe working condition.
  1. Stakeholder Relationships
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal stakeholders, including department heads, hospital administration, and patients’ families.
  • Establish and foster strong relationships with external stakeholders such as doctors and service providers, maintaining open communication to ensure the best possible patient outcomes.
  • Act as an advocate for the nursing profession and the hospital in all professional interactions.

Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
  • A certified qualification in Neonatal care is essential.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Proven experience in nursing, with a focus on neonatal or ICU care.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in managing a nursing team will be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of labor laws and financial principles related to healthcare.
  • Familiarity with the private healthcare sector and the challenges it faces is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in computer use.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel when necessary.
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory.
